Marten Klompien | Bernard Divendal

De Kunsthof
18 October 2025 to 13 December 2025

About this activity.

The Kunsthof presents the fourth push exhibition featuring works by two generations of northern artists:

Marten Klompien (Hoogezand 1917 - Groningen 1996)

Marten was a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist, known for his expressive depictions of landscapes and shipping. His work began naturally but evolved toward expressionism with coarse brushstrokes and a sober, earthy color palette. Marten attended evening classes at the Kunstnijverheidsschool (School of Applied Arts), later the Academie Minerva. Marten was a member of the artist groups De Ploeg and Nu. His paintings often depict the Groningen landscape, cityscapes, and ships, painted with gouache. The poet Hendrik de Vries wrote about Marten's work: "This dark, heavy work is, in any case, quintessentially Groningen."

The work by Marten shown in this exhibition comes from the collection of Kunstpunt Groningen.

Bernard Divendal (Amsterdam 1952)

"For me, the core of painting has always been an intuitive and formal approach to images that present themselves. Clarity and structure are essential in this regard. At the same time, there is room for (non-romantic) adventure and for drastic interventions, as solutions to issues that arise during the painting process. All this with the aim of making visible an abstract drama of form and color. And to create order, at least temporarily, on another level, in the chaos inherent in human existence.

In my work, there is no connection with observable reality, but the viewer is, of course, free to make this connection through their own associations."

Bernard graduated from the Minerva Academy, lives in Groningen, and works in Bedum.

🍾 OPENING: Saturday, October 18, 4:00 p.m. by Erica Scheper (Art Rental Project Manager at Kunstpunt Groningen). Everyone is welcome!
