Now in Kunstpunt's Art Rental: Harry Markusse
About this activity.
What happens to an unfinished painting? Or to a canvas that is rejected during the creative process? For artist Harry Markusse, these remnants are often the starting point of something new. In the solo exhibition Re-used, he shows how materials from earlier works are given a second life in new compositions.
In his studio, Markusse collects leftover canvases, colour studies, discarded paintings and other materials produced during the painting process. Rather than throwing them away, he reincorporates them into new works. He cuts, folds, stacks, paints over and combines paintings from different periods, creating entirely new images. Some works are presented in Perspex, transforming the painting from a flat surface into a spatial object that exists somewhere between painting, collage and wall sculpture.
His most recent works represent a new step in this material-based exploration. Painted pieces of canvas are stitched together using a sewing machine, creating new connections between painting, textile and object. Traces of earlier works remain visible and become part of a new narrative.
With Re-used, Markusse offers a glimpse into a part of the artistic process that usually remains hidden. The exhibition focuses not only on the finished artwork, but also on the process, the decisions and the materials that precede it.
Alongside his own work, Harry presents a personal selection from the Kunstpunt Art Rental Collection: Harry’s Choice.
