Paola Quiñonez

Paola Quiñonez (El Salvador, 1998) is a visual artist. She works with clay, paper mache, ceramics, digital art and photography.

“Over the past few years I’ve been researching clay and portraiture. Learning how to sculpt, fire and glaze it. What started as an exploration of the material became a whole collection of moments, sentences and faces. Something therapeutic. First it was one, then three, then five, then ten, and now years later there are thirty or so and the collection is still growing.
I believe that as an artist, someone uses art as a tool to explore their life stories, for me every piece I create is part of the archive of my life. Each work becomes a story that contributes to my identity. It is proof of existence or a vague memory. Each portrait explores themes of identity, pop culture and tradition. They are all a self-reflection, a critic of my ego and destruction of my superego. It all boils down to a story told through clay, masks, paint, glaze and eyelashes, and just like one’s identity, art is something fluid and always under construction and so is this project.”

About project 'Lucht'

The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Paola Quiñonez. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
