Jedidja Smalbil

Jedidja Smalbil (1996) is a photographer mostly using medium format film.

THE WAITING ROOM

“I call my work ’after-images’ or ‘desolate man-made landscapes’, suggesting a memory or a narrative. I find imagery in the mundane, depicting domestic environments, intimate interiors, fragility and sensibility. The size and material use of the works vary between passport photographs, prints on fabric and life-size darkroom prints, estranging and reframing the subject itself. I tend to grow obsessions out of fascinations, ending up filling books with azure blue table cloths, beige bedsheets, brick-heavy ashtrays and cheap, plastic monobloc chairs.
With the support of Lucht, I have space to focus more on film as a medium, crossing and expanding my practice as a photographer. Within film I want to start making short documentaries, and continue researching performative actions, to slow, almost non-moving imagery.
Lucht offers me an opportunity for experiment, development and investment in the finishing and quality of running projects. To be seen on one of the billboards is a longterm project: THE WAITING ROOM, an inter-disciplinary work, switching between photography, text and film. It captures vulnerability, stagnation and turmoil, contrasting with industrial environment, agricultural plastics and abstracting man-made mountains.”

About project 'Lucht'

De coronamaatregelen hebben de kunstsector enorm getroffen. Tentoonstellingen en kunstsubsidies zijn geannuleerd of uitgesteld. Het is een onzekere tijd voor veel kunstenaars. Met het project Lucht wil Kunstpunt Groningen kunstenaars en vormgevers uit de gemeente Groningen ondersteunen. 87 Groninger kunstenaars hebben een stipendium ontvangen waarmee ze nieuw werk hebben gemaakt, waaronder Jedidja Smalbil. Met een billboard-expositie van 27 september t/m 17 oktober presenteren we verspreid door de stad Groningen alle kunstenaars aan je. Bekijk hier het werk van de andere kunstenaars.
