Artwork for Selwerderhof Cemetery
Art commissions for companies
Client: Selwerderhof Cemetery Groningen
In the centre of the new children’s area at the Selwerderhof cemetery, space has been created for a seating area where next of kin can sit in peace and quiet. This project has since been realised with the assistance of Kunst op Maat.
The municipality wanted the children’s area — designed by Leo Dijkstra — at the Selwerderhof cemetery to have a bench that stimulates children and adults to use their imaginations. This is how Krullend Lint (Curly Ribbon) came to be. In the curls of a ribbon, many shapes can be seen, each having its own association. The contrast of a ribbon with text at a funeral versus a ribbon around a gift is also as great as the contrast between the children playing and the parents/grandparents mourning at the grave of the deceased child.
Artist Maeike Bokma, who created the piece, graduated from Minerva Art Academy as an interior architect and furniture designer in 2007. She largely draws her inspiration from the shape and feel of the materials. However, ‘Krullend Lint’ is different. ‘I let the function guide me The object had to appeal to children. Because of that, I think adding colour is more important than the original colour of the material.’
