Kunst op Maat has led the art commission at the new regional police cell complex on Hooghoudtstraat. Detainees will be held here on remand for short periods. The complex was designed by architect Walter Kemperman. On 16 January, the artwork by Merijn Vrij at the cell complex was unveiled by State Secretary Albayrak.
The artwork adds a round shape to an otherwise orthogonal building. The robust stainless steel is bent and braided into a network, creating a wall. This wall separates one tree from the other trees. The trees symbolise society and the detainee. The trees also add the element of growth to the artwork. The reflective nature of the stainless steel in changing weather conditions and the trees through the seasons and years, will constantly change the look of the artwork.
