Paul Verheul
I am half-Dutch and half-British. In 2019 I moved to The Netherlands from the UK and studied a Masters in painting at the Frank Mohr Institute, I graduated from this in 2022. Since moving to The Netherlands, I have been drawn towards materiality, using thread, rope and textile to express my own identity - line becomes representative of journey and story. In this endeavour I research traditions of lacemaking, quilt-making, weaving, spinning, sewing. I approach this research from the perspective of a painter, looking for transparency, exploring relationships between materials and experimenting with what a surface can be. Movement and silent music pulses through my work, a steady rhythm of flows and pauses, a pattern of presence and absence.
In the last two years I have exhibited across The Netherlands, including a solo exhibition with NP3 RE:Search:Gallery, Groningen, and a solo exhibition with Museum Belvedere at AFLSLAG BLV, Heerenveen.
