Laura van Gaans

Photography, Painting, Drawing

The work of Laura van Gaans (1979) revolves around the search for a foothold in a world that is constantly in motion.
We structure our environment to get a grip on reality, but at the same time we are overwhelmed by the many stimuli that we have to process every day. Light, sound and movement form a constant stream of information that sometimes manifests itself clearly, but often comes in abstract and fragmented. This tension between understanding and becoming overstimulated is central to her work.

Laura naturally has a photographic eye with which she frames reality. Photography helps her to get a grip on her environment. She translates these images into works in which she plays with perception and interpretation. Collages often form a starting point for translating ideas into visual works.

Based on her ability to bring order to chaos, in her work she is looking for a way to give stillness a place in that chaos.
