Sundial (Zonnewijzer)

About this artwork.

Two sundials are arranged side by side on a panel facing south. The left part is a pole style sundial with which the solar time can be read. The right part is a point sundial, with time equalization loops, that reads the clock time. The blue and red loops are also related to summer and winter time.
Both sundials have the same so-called style triangle, which is important as a shadow giver.

The motto on the sign at the back right:

"While the midfathers assemble
time passes
in hope of wise policy. "
 
Eugène Roebroeck, former geography teacher at the Praedinius Gymnasium in Groningen, is a sundial builder and restorer. He lives and works in Haren.
As a nationally recognized sundial expert, he designed, among other things, the cross-hair sundial in Appingedam. He also restored many copies, such as those of the Martini Tower in Groningen, the sundial of d’Olle Witte in Winschoten and the Ludolphie sundial in Delfzijl.
