What a View (Grote Kijker)

Herbert Koekkoek

About this artwork.

The Ten Boer Memorial Park is part of a four-hectare landscape park, situated between the Damsterdiep and the Ten Boerster forest. Spread across three mounds lie a burial field, a wall of urns and a dedicated field for scattering ashes. A six-metre-high Spotters Hill was constructed using the excess soil and turf that was the result of the construction of this memorial park. From its highest point, you can look out over the adjoining forest and farmland and on the horizon is the Groningen skyline.

On top of Spotters Hill is a pair of Corten steel binoculars, the lenses of which are aimed at the city of Groningen; they symbolise the former administrative partnership between the two municipalities (until a municipal reorganisation, the former municipality of Ten Boer took on a lot of responsibilities from the former municipality of Groningen).
Initially, the binoculars stood next to a large concrete bench and chair, but these were sadly vandalised and had to be removed.

Herbert Koekkoek made this sculpture for the municipality of Ten Boer.
