Wall sculpture GSV school
Klaas van Dijk
About this artwork.
The wall sculpture on the side facade of the GSV school building is a stylised representation of children playing outside. The human and animal figures were manually beaten out of copper, a technique characteristic of the work of Klaas van Dijk.
Klaas van Dijk (1913-1990), creator of this work of art, is best known for his manually unfolded copper and aluminum wall objects and sculptures. But Van Dijk was also active in other art areas. He also painted, watercolors, drew and lithographed landscapes.
Van Dijk was trained by the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. He was a versatile artist; alongside painting, watercolours, lithographs, sgraffitos, glass mosaics, copper plastics, stone and bronze statues, he also made fonts and wall hangings. His free work led to various commissions from school boards, housing associations and churches. In 1977, he was awarded the Egberts Prize in Groningen, for his contribution to the De Ploeg artists' association and other cultural services.
