Saint Nicholas' Church wall relief (Wandreliëf Heilige Nicolaaskerk)

J.A.A. Dresmé (toegeschreven aan)

About this artwork.

A concrete relief has been placed around the entrance of the Saint Nicholas Church, representing St. Peter and the Ship of the Church. The wall sculpture is attributed to the architect of the church, J.A.A. Dresmé. In the facade to the right of the entrance, the German artist Elisabeth Quademechels shows a glass-in-concrete representation of the patron saint of the church: Saint Nicholas of Mira.
The two works of art are clear examples of monumental art from the post-WWII reconstruction period. Characteristic of this art is, among other things, the integration of visual art in architecture.
Inside the church, the windows in the twenty-meter-long north wall contain abstract stained glass representations by Carel Bruens. He also designed the 12 round windows with stained glass in the high choir on the east side, and the stained glass window with the stylized representation of a dove in the baptistery.

St. Nicholas' Church was built in 1958/1959 to a design by J.A.A.. Desmé. In the design of the church, the architect J.A.A. Dresmé focused on the so-called Reconstruction style, using both traditional and modern forms.
