Videobusstop

OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) / Rem Koolhaas

About this artwork.

This particular bus stop consists of a tiled wall with a steel mesh curtain across it. The entire structure is covered by a glass roof. Behind the curtain is a monitor in the wall for displaying video. On the other side of the wall are words that refer to aspects of video clips.

The stop was designed by architect Rem Koolhaas. He made it in 1990 for the What a Wonderful World! exhibition, organised by the Groninger Museum. The museum asked several architects to design a temporary pavilion for viewing videos. Some of these have been preserved for the city. Koolhaas figured that, while waiting for the bus, the time could be put to good use by watching interesting clips.

About the assignment.

After the What a Wonderful World event, three pavilions were demolished. The two remaining video pavilions can be found on Hereplein and Emmaplein. Since 1995, Bernard Tschumi's design on Hereplein has featured a program of video and multimedia installations. Its programming has been in the hands of Kunstpunt since December 2021. The pavilion on Emmaplein by Rem Koolhaas now serves as a bus stop.
