Untitled (wall statue - muurplastiek)

Klaas van Dijk

About this artwork.

This copper wall statue originally consisted of two parts. One part was formed by two linked rings, the other by two hands holding a ring. Only the latter part is still there. The artwork depicts the name of the building on which it is placed: the former village house “De Schakel” in Oosterhoogebrug.

laas van Dijk, creator of this work of art, became best known for his manually hammered copper and aluminium wall objects and sculptures. One of his most famous copper works is De Haan at the Praediniussingel in Groningen. But Van Dijk was also active in other fields of art. He also painted, created watercolours, drew and lithographed landscapes.

Van Dijk received his training from the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. In the nineteen-twenties and thirties, he was also a member of the Groningen artist group De Ploeg. Although the Netherlands was his home base, he also worked in France and the United States. In 1977, he received the cultural Egberts Prize in Groningen, for his services to De Ploeg, among other things. Van Dijk worked tirelessly to ensure that young artists would join this artists' collective.
