Untitled (sphere - bol)

Frans Peeters

About this artwork.

Smooth and white is the sphere, which is “split” by a deep and tapering notch. The sculptor seems to be completely absent from this work; the object, executed in perfect curves, could have come from a factory. The use of polyester enables the “signature” of the artist to be switched off, which is exactly what Peeters is striving for. Attention is primarily focused on the form. The irregularity (the notch) does not detract from the main shape, but even emphasises it. Colour would only distract, hence the choice of white.

Peeters’ sphere has been in several places in the city. As part of the sculpture manifestation En plein public in 1968, the sculpture was on display in the Coendersborg park. After the Municipality had purchased the artwork, it stood in the garden of the Groninger Museum on Praediniussingel for many years. In the year 2000, it was given this spot in the Drielanden district near Lewenborg.
