Untitled (murals - muurschilderingen - 4 parts)
Yland/ Metz (Lilian van Opdorp en Jos Dijkstra)
About this artwork.
Commissioned by the housing association De Huismeesters and the Municipality of Groningen, the artist duo Yland Metz (consisting of Lilian van Opdorp and Jos Dijkstra) designed a series of murals for four gable ends in south Selwerd.
In order to break through the rather austere character of the 1950s development in the district, the artists were inspired by the exuberant shapes and warm colours that are characteristic of southern European cities. On the gable ends they mounted painted panels depicting Mediterranean architectural styles. The artist duo also made use of the existing windows, by attaching frames in the same Mediterranean style to them.
The gable end of the residential block on Bedumerstraat, has one window framed in this manner. In the streets that follow, the paintings increase in surface area: Johan de Wittstraat, the Adriaan Pauwstraat and the Van Oldenbarneveltlaan.
