Untitled (girl - meisje)

Anno Smith

About this artwork.

The Remonstrants Gasthuis was founded in 1892 for the poor, the elderly and orphans. A richly-decorated stucco gate leads to the dwellings, grouped around a large courtyard garden. Between bushes and flowers stands, on a brick plinth, a girl who is casting a meek glance at the dish in her hand. Perhaps the artist wanted to portray a poor girl or an orphan.

The ceramic statue was presented in 1965 by the former residents, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Remonstrants Gasthuis. The commemorative stone states that the “girl” was made by Anne Smit, which is most likely a corruption of Anno Smith.
