About this artwork.
Standing at almost 6 metres, this sculpture of polished stainless steel consists of five geometric shapes – triangle, hexagon, rectangle, cone and pillar – stacked on top of each other. In seemingly dubious equilibrium, the steel object is conspicuously present in the courtyard of the housing complex, where it contrasts with the symmetrical horizontal lines of the houses. Not only in the construction of the sculpture, but also in its location, the artist opted for asymmetry: the sculpture is not in the middle of the square, but off to the side. However, the piece remains visible from the street – the striking “red box” and glistening steel shapes attract attention to the square, from outside. In this way, the sculpture pulls the private residential courtyard into the hustle and bustle of the city. The shape at the bottom, up to about 1.80 metres high, was deliberately kept open to facilitate the view of the residents.
For Kie Ellens, all of the material at hand is potentially useful for his sculptures. The way in which the different parts “work together” gives the sculpture its meaning.
