About this artwork.
Seen from a distance, the matte grey steel work of art evokes associations with a mammoth, or - at the right light incidence - with a lion who captured an antelope. At closer range, the sculpture, which roughly consists of two planes, takes on a more abstract form. The planes, each composed of two parts, are slightly shifted in relation to each other, but fit together. The artist has responded well to the most important lines of sight. The sculpture is placed in such a way that it makes itself broad, as it were, for those who approach it straight from the front. The movement of the viewer gives the sculpture depth and the surfaces act as decors with openings that provide views to the space behind them.
In his design, Huib Fens found an answer to the requirements as expressed in the CBK's commission; the artwork was to give the Korreweg an extra accent as well as serving as a landmark. For this sculpture, the artist has taken the floor plan of the location as a starting point and has slid it together, cut it up and pulled it apart. Thus, according to Fens, the environment itself has been elevated to the status of art.
