Untitled (The Pears - De Peren)

Gert Jan Mulder

About this artwork.

This large orange sculpture – officially Untitled but colloquially known as The Pears – towers high above road, water and nature. This piece of steel artwork is comprised of three parts. A tall, upright object topped with a protrusion that resembles a pear stalk; transverse to this is the second shape, resting on the third. This unobtrusive last part disappears into the foliage but, according to the artist Gert Jan Mulder, it could be the tip of a much larger object, which hides under the foliage and the ground.

This piece first found a home in front of the former Martini Hall, where it stood for five years, forming part of a triptych of sculptures entitled Still Life, Still Life. But changes in and around the Martini Palza meant The Pears had to head for storage. The only piece remaining at the original site on Leonard Springerlaan is Pi. But, The Pears found a new home on 12 April 2012, standing on the lawn near the bus stop for the Piccardthof district. In honour of this new location, Gert Jan Mulder added a kidney-shaped pedestal to the sculpture.
