Untitled

Siep van den Berg

About this artwork.

The sculpture consists of four steel columns, rhythmically stacked in open and closed pieces of H and T profiles. Each part is placed on a plinth in the shape of a rectangular concrete block. Despite the "strict" system that underlies the sculpture, the work has something playful about it.
Although Siep van den Berg developed a colour plan for this, the sculpture was initially only galvanised to protect it from the weather. Because children used the artwork as a climbing frame, the zinc layer was damaged and it was given the typical Van den Berg colours as protection.

The sculpture can be regarded as the spatial variant of the wall paintings that Van den Berg created mainly in the 1970s. Again and again the artist varies with horizontal and vertical, with lines and blocks – using only the colours red, yellow, blue, black and white. Geometry is his source of inspiration; the whole must know order and clarity. At the same time, dynamism and rhythm are brought into the work by the pattern of shapes and colours.

Specially designed for this place, the group of sculptures harmonises in its own way with its surroundings. The artist himself gives his sculptures and paintings no intention or meaning. No signature either. It is about the development of the simplification of shapes, and that is clear imagery for which he requires not futher interpretation. This group of sculptures is one of the last iron sculptures by Siep van den Berg.
