About this artwork.
In the iron wall sculpture, continuous lines and right angles form the organising principle. The open compartments thus created enter into a spatial relationship with each other and with the wall behind them. Initially, the sculpture was designed for one of the walls of the canteen of the Lijnco paper factory. When that space was given a different function, a place was found on the outer facade of the building in consultation with the artist. For Siep van de Berg, it was important that the dark-coloured bricks of the facade wall form a unique contrast with the light, grey-blue colour of the sculpture. In 2017, the piece of art was painted orange by the current owner.
Siep van den Berg started painting freely in around 1935, and as an artist, subsequently developed from pure naturalism, via impressionism and cubism, to constructivism, which is characterised by the purely imaginative way of expression. In the 1970s, he made various mouldings and murals. Geometry was his source of inspiration. Again and again, the artist variated with horizontal and vertical, with lines and blocks – using only the colours red, yellow, blue, black and white. At the same time, he brought dynamism and rhythm to the work through the pattern of shapes and colours.
