Two pergolas (Twee pergola's)
Fred van Hessen
About this artwork.
Both pergolas are made of powder-coated aluminium and are placed near two of the access roads to the inner area of a housing complex on the Bleekveld. The pergola on the south side of the block is reminiscent of a mechanical crab with scissors or legs, connected by stainless steel cables. The “trunk” allows the pergola to be covered with climbing plants growing from the centre.
The smaller pergola on the north side refers to the industrial architecture of Scholten's sugar factory that used to stand there, with playful elements such as a “rose window”, a colourful “buttress” and a brick motif.
