Triptych (Drieluik)
Bas Lugthart, Maree Blok
About this artwork.
As the title Triptych indicates, the sculpture consists of three elements. These contrast with each other in terms of material and colour. A gate referring to ancient times – with the Roman year MCMXCII in the architrave – is connected by an oval to a blue-coloured “oak leaf”. The gate is made of reinforced concrete with marble cladding. The other two elements are made of steel.
Following a redevelopment plan in Hoogkerk-zuid, Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart were commissioned to create a work of art at the public library, and in the immediate vicinity of a convergence of three streets. In the sculpture, the artists have reflected the character of the location – a lot of “green” next to tightly designed housing – in the “oak leaf” and the “classic gate” respectively.
The Triptych has been placed on a circular square specially installed for the sculpture. The monumental character of the sculpture is provided by its completely free placement on the square, in the visible axes of the streets that lead to the square.
Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart have been working together since 1990 and publish their work under a collective name. They make a lot of monumental work in public space, in which man in relation to his environment is a central theme.
