Tree (Boom)
Merijn Vrij
About this artwork.
In front of the new cell complex of the Groningen Regional Police, designed by the architect Walter Kemperman, stands a robust network of stainless steel tubes, which is braided half around a tree. This way, the artwork separates one tree from the other trees on the lawn, but it is not complete isolation. The other trees are also visible through the transparent wall of the artwork. According to artist Merijn Vrij, the trees symbolise society and the detainee. With Tree, Vrij gave an emphatic addition to the location of the cell complex, where people are taken into custody for a short period of time.
