Tree (Boom)

Niells A.F. Niemeijer

About this artwork.

Tree, which is made of recycled metal, has a heart at the top of its trunk which is divided into two branches. The “bark” of the tree has been processed so that it seems to change colour as the weather changes; from ochre to sienna, from gold to rust. The “beating heart” and the “living bark” contrast with the roughly “sawn-off” branches, evoking images of a life cut short. But the artist himself sees the tree, which he made as part of his art school graduation, above all as a symbol of personal growth: “In the future, I know I will be influenced by external sources, I’ll ‘branch out’ as I grow, bringing colour to life.”
