Torso Lucy

About this artwork.

Bastiaan de Groot made a series of four torsos in 1985. He had one of them cast in brass. This was placed in the park on Orionlaan.
 
With Torso Lucy, De Groot wanted to portray beauty and eroticism. By omitting the arms and head, attention remains focused on the body: the torso. As far as posture is concerned, the artist has actually given the torso a classical pose, the “contrapost”. This is a position in which the left leg carries the full weight and thus the model takes on a somewhat slanted posture. This posture can also be seen in the torso. The left hip is higher than the right one, and that is brought back into balance by the shoulders. The right shoulder is higher than the left.
 
In 1988 the statue was stolen, but it was later recovered. Thereafter, the torso was still not safe. The statue was molested on several occasions. Because the piece was often pulled over, it was placed on a sturdy base in 1997 following consultation with the artist.
