Torso
Gjalt Blaauw
About this artwork.
In Torso, Gjalt Blaauw combines white marble with hard stone. The white marble was initially no more than a remnant of the statue Little Man (Mannetje). The artist then reused this remnant for Torso.
About the title of the sculpture, Blaauw says: “I don't go figurative, but associative, and that's how I handled my titles at the time. Upon completion, this piece of stone reminded me in the distance of an ancient torso, hence the title.” In his later work, Blaauw stopped giving titles because he wanted to let people freely make their own associations.
Blaauw is an artist who works stone in an “honest” way. He does not polish the material, as can be seen in this sculpture. The places where he has been working with a hammer and chisel are clearly recognisable in the stone.
