The Seven Nests of Hommes (de zeven Hommes Nesten)

Margriet Diertens

About this artwork.

High up in the trees in the garden of Hommes there are seven shiny bronze nests – in spring and in summer they are hidden behind the foliage, but they really come into their own in autumn and winter, peeking out from between the bare branches.

Margriet Diertens created these pieces of art when the garden was extended in 2008. Incorporated into the bronze nests are various household objects that once belonged to local residents, items like ornaments, keys and pens. In a way, you could say that the artist built these nests with the stories, the memories and the wishes of the residents themselves.

Diertens says that The Seven Nests of Hommes (de zeven Hommes Nesten) represents new life, change, safety and living. The number seven itself has a special meaning for the artist too: “It's a mythical number that incorporates the concepts of perfection and completeness; it’s a lucky number.”
