The Dreamtime

Bas Lugthart, Maree Blok

About this artwork.

Please note: The Dreamtime is in storage during the winter.

A large transparent photo of the face of Maree Blok has been placed in a pond. The image is reflected in the water. The eyes are closed, as if sunken into dreams. Geometrical constructions float around her head; they seem to indicate dream activity.

Blok created the piece of art in 1993 for the sculpture exhibition 'Stadsparadijs' organised by the CBK Groningen in the Noorderplantsoen where it also was installed in a pond. The artwork has been in Helpman since 1996.

Maree Blok has worked with visual artist Bas Lugthart since 1990. Their work is about people in relation to their environment. Abstract and figurative forms are combined in a wide variety of materials and techniques to create statues, video sculptures and installations, and the art often involves the environment and the viewer interacting. The Dreamtime is an example of this: image and environment merge into one another through a game of reflection and transparency.
