Square (Winkelhaak)

Hans Mes

About this artwork.

Square by Hans Mes can be seen in front of the facade of the Masonic Lodge on the Turfsingel. The artwork consists of a triangle made of brick, on which the contours of a classic model square of polished brass are placed.

The square is the symbol of the Freemasons. It is in fact the instrument par excellence with which to check whether something is square. Carpenters and draughtsmen use the square to check right angles for their accuracy. Sharp corners are acceptable (or at right angles) and something that is not acceptable is not okay.

Freemasons see man as a “rough stone” that works itself into a “cubic stone”. The stone thus formed can then be used in the construction of the “Temple of Completion”: the symbol of the freemasons for a better society. The “work” – working the “rough stone” – is done together in the lodges. Attributes from the construction world (including the square) are used, which have a symbolic meaning in this context.

The location of the Masonic symbol clarifies the purpose of the building to the outside world.
