Sixty Birdhouses, Grunobuurt (Zestig vogelhuisjes Grunobuurt)
Lena van der Wal
About this artwork.
Between the northern and southern parts of Grunobuurt runs the busy Parkweg. In order to connect both parts closer to one another, artist and designer Lena van der Wal designed the “Bird House Route”: a route through the neighbourhood and past sixty unique bird houses. The shapes of the houses are inspired by the architecture in the Grunobuurt; for example, they refer to the Amsterdam School, the Finnish school, the reconstruction style and the recent new building. Ornithologists were consulted during the development process to ensure the houses were suitable as breeding places for different species of birds, bats and insects.
The houses were made by model builder Jaap Kraayenhof and consist of larch wood accented in white.
