Sitting Woman (Zittende vrouw)
Bastiaan de Groot
About this artwork.
On a brick pedestal sits a naked woman, completely hunched up. She has her arms wrapped around her raised legs, her head resting on her knees. Because her face is hidden from view, it remains unclear what state of mind the woman is in. Is she tired, sad, angry, disappointed?
Bastiaan de Groot created Sitting Woman in 1974, when he was studying at Minerva Art Academy.
The sculpture was purchased by the Municipality of Groningen as part of the BKR. In 1980, at De Groot's request, the piece was placed in the Prinsentuin. He found that the tranquillity of the work was in keeping with the atmosphere in the garden.
In 1984 it was part of the sculpture exhibition Nienoord-Beeldoord in Leek.
Until the end of the 1970s Bastiaan de Groot worked mainly with figures. One of his most famous works from that period is Pregnant Annet (Zwangere Annet), which he made six years after Sitting Woman. It is located at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
Since about 1980, De Groot’s sculptures have mostly been abstract in character. He mainly works with marble that he imports from Portugal in his own truck.
