Sintra I, Sintra II, Sintra III
Frans Franssen
About this artwork.
These works of art were installed on three blind end gables of the flats on the Van Ketwich Verschuurlaan, which forms the southern boundary of the Wijert. They consist of three glazed tile tableaus in red, yellow and blue. Frans Franssen was inspired by the widespread use of glazed tiles on the facades of buildings in Portugal. The titles Sintra I, II and III refer to a coastal town near Lisbon. The figurative representations on the tableaux – including human figures and shapes of buildings – are inspired by the relationship between the human figure and architecture.
The tableaux form an artistic signpost. The residents of De Wijert felt that their neighbourhood needed more landmarks. Due to the repetitive design of the identical building blocks, it is sometimes difficult to orientate oneself in the neighbourhood. The pieces of art, in three different colours, make areas more recognisable. This also applies to the spheres, squares and pyramids on three other blocks of flats on the Van Ketwich Verschuurlaan, which were made by Allie van Altena.
