Secret Life in a Public Body

Henk Visch

About this artwork.

The larger-than-life-size sculpture by Henk Visch is a figure made of bronze. The man reaches forward and rests on his fingertips, which gives tension to the posture.
Visch's images are not easy to interpret. They have a poetic beauty and invite their own interpretations. His work is mainly characterised by mystery, often reinforced by the titles, as in this case too. Secret Life in a Public Body refers to “a secret life”. But by public body, does Visch mean his sculpture or the place where it stands? And what are those secrets?

The artwork first stood in the Westerhaven car park for five years and took up exactly the space of a parking space there. The contrast with the shiny vehicles was striking. Since 31 March 2009, it has been located on the square near the Voormalig Klein Poortje (former small gate) at the Oosterhaven (eastern port).
