Seats (zitobjecten)
Erna de Bie
About this artwork.
These four seats are minimalist in design and built from hard stone and wood; materials that can also be found in the building and garden. The seats are positioned in such as way as to complement the optical aesthetic of the garden, which, in turn, reflects the lines of the building and the courtyard. The windows on the eastern side of the building are mirrored in the opposing stone fence with visible recesses. The seats are positioned relative to the windows; they are also aligned with the recesses in the partition wall. Furthermore, they also align with the front of the verger’s house.
Four of the five seats either seem to or do actually lean over a planted area, creating a harmonious connection between the bench and the garden. This highlights further the role of the courtyard as a meeting place – a place where, after a religious service or occasion, people can continue to interact.
