Rock ‘n’ Roll

Richard Deacon

About this artwork.

The work of art entitled Rock ‘n’ Roll consists of five linked aluminium elements that are kind of ring-shaped and kind of folded together.  The surface is smooth and shiny, and unashamedly shows traces of the polishing process. This sculpture is elevated on aluminium pedestals on the edge of a large city garden near the “cruise ship”, an office building that houses the DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – the Education Executive Agency) and the Groningen Tax and Customs Authority.

Richard Deacon is a British artist who calls himself a craftsman rather than a sculptor. Deacon prefers to use everyday and industrial materials (except aluminium, wood, steel, PVC and corrugated cardboard) and he leaves the processes he uses, such as weld seams, bolts and glue, visible. He feels that this is how he can allow the observer to be a part of the creative process.
