Remember, honey? (Weet je nog, liefje?)

Albert Geertjes

About this artwork.

The sculpture was commissioned by the management of the youth prison Het Poortje, on the occasion of the opening of the new prison building situated on the road from Groningen to Dorkwerd.  Albert Geertjes artwork is related to captivity. The object shows a desperate glass naked figure, trapped in an infinite iron “language spiral” of regret and melancholy. A spotlight illuminates the head at night.
The sentences are ringing:

REMEMBER, HONEY?
DO YOU STILL REMEMBER WHO WE WERE,
WHO WE WANTED TO BE?
HONEY, WHERE ARE YOU?
WHERE ARE WE?
SOMETIMES I THINK I RECOGNISE YOU
AND SEE AGAIN HOW I SAW YOU
WHEN YOU STARTED
STICKING HAIRS ON YOUR CHEEK,
FEET IN THE GRASS WET WITH TEARS,
SLOW SPECK ON THE DYKE,
GREY CLOUDS IN THE SKY, IN MY HEAD.
IF I SHOULD RUN INTO YOU, SWEETHEART,
WILL YOU STILL KNOW ME? WILL I KNOW YOU?
WILL YOU STILL REMEMBER WHERE IT ALL BEGAN?
WIND WATER SALT AND SUN.
DO YOU STILL REMEMBER HOW LIGHT EVERYTHING WAS
AND SOFT AS I CARESSED YOUR HAIR.
JUST YOU AND ME.
ALL THAT MATTERED WAS US
WE KNEW NOTHING ELSE.
DO YOU KNOW...etc.
