Reliefs en creux of a boy and girl figure ( Reliëfs-en-creux van een jongens- en meisjesfiguur)

Wladimir de Vries

About this artwork.

The main entrance to the Augustine College is decorated with two figures in relief en creux: depictions that recede into the surface and do not rise above it. This is in contrast to bass-, demi- and haut-relief in which the images rise from the plane. On one side of the entrance you can see a boy figure holding an object in his downward-facing hand that conjures up associations with a set square. The other figure is depicted in the same pose, but the vague contours of a dress and breasts indicate a girl figure. She is holding something in her hand that resembles a twig.

In the courtyard garden of the school is another work by Wladimir de Vries. This is Firefighter (Brandweermannetje) from 1957, a bronze sculpture 60 cm tall. It stands in the pond.

A third piece of artwork can be found in the hall of the school. This is a 4x17-metre large mural by Henk Krijger, untitled.

There are several reliefs and sculptures by Wladimir de Vries in the city. The most famous are Agriculture and Cattle Breeding (Landbouw en Veeteelt) colloquially known as Blote Bet, on the Herebrug; The Foal (Het Veulen) on the Radesingel and The Bison (De Wisent) in the Noorderplantsoen.
