Graffiti test locations (6 locations)

About this artwork.

With the idea of making the city of Groningen a little more beautiful, a pilot was started in the period 2017-2020 in which various graffiti artists are allowed to practice legally at designated locations.

The locations are the walls in the right bicycle tunnel at the Noordzeebrug, walls in the bicycle tunnel between Reitdiephaven and Vinkhuizen, the walls under the viaduct of the Van Iddekingeweg and the CiBoGa site. This last location has been abandoned due to housing construction, and a new location was designated for this in 2021, namely the basement wall of the Gideonbrug on the Uppsalaweg. All of the municipality's moveble canteens have also been made available for practice.

The aim of the initiative is to make the city look more attractive by facilitating graffiti in public spaces, while at the same time ensuring that there is less nuisance from graffiti being tagged on places and private property. The pilot showed that the locations are a success and will be retained. The facilitation of the locations and canteens will be maintained at least until 2026, after which the current state of affairs will be reviewed. The initiative was carried out by Urban House Groningen, a foundation subsidized by the municipality of Groningen. UHG listens to artists, local residents and the municipality, resulting in a pleasant collaboration.
