Gate and Stepped Tower (Poort en Getrapte Toren)

René de Boer

About this artwork.

Between the Hofstede de Grootkade, Otto Eerelmanstraat, Wassenberghstraat and Taco Mesdagplein is a freely accessible inner garden – called 'The Palette' by local residents. René de Boer created two works of art for this garden: Gate and Stepped Tower. The statues have an identical top – made of Corten steel and aluminum – and this refers in its shape to the nearby water tower. The environment was emphatically involved in the design that De Boer made together with a group of residents. Stepped Tower, for example, also functions as a climbing object for the neighborhood children, and Gate's reinforcing bars provide space for vegetation, with which it adapts to the green interior space.

About the assignment.

René de Boer made the artworks for the neighborhood council. The design was submitted in 2009 via Bureau Loeks to Een Goed Idee, at the time a scheme of the Municipality of Groningen to give residents' initiatives a helping hand in the implementation of a project. The municipality of Groningen financed the refurbishment of the inner courtyard, as well as part of the artwork.
