Pisces (De Vis)
Jan van Baren
About this artwork.
In 1998, a new area of hidden city was created – in the form of a courtyard garden – on the site of the former public housing agency. A few wall remnants of the former office building were retained as a reminder, forming ruins in a public yet private oasis of greenery.
In the city garden stands a stylised fish on a pedestal by Jan van Baren. He created the sculpture in 1975 under the BKR scheme. The sculpture was part of a planned series of twelve zodiac signs, which Van Baren never completed. The sculpture stood at the artist’s house in Westeremden until his death in 1995, but the Municipality of Groningen owned the piece. In 1998 it found a suitable location for the sculpture.
Jan van Baren primarily created figurative sculptures of stone, bronze, wood and combinations thereof. There are several sculptures by the artist – mostly animal figures – in the city of Groningen.
