Piccardthofplas light curtain (Lichtscherm Piccardthofplas – 92 elements)

Noud de Wolf

About this artwork.

The Piccardthofplas lake, a natural monument, is populated by large numbers of birds. Especially when it's dark, the motorway along the water's edge can act as a jamming device for the birds, which come towards the light of the headlights. The artwork by Noud de Wolf acts as a screen that catches the light.

De Wolf had a study carried out into the effect of vehicle lighting and the ways of blocking it effectively. He designed a 200-metre-long screen consisting of 96 panels, which capture the light of the cars. The panels come in four sizes. Each time, a series of four panels is placed consecutively in size, with the fifth one flipped so that the next series is seen in mirror image. This placement creates an undulating movement (like the water behind the light curtain) which is reinforced by the faint s-bend in which the Corten steel is rolled. The undulation, the earthen colour of the steel and the gravel between the panels make the work of art a natural filter between the tranquillity of the water’s surface and the dynamics of urban life.
