About this artwork.
The Remonstrants Gasthuis was founded in 1892 for the poor, the elderly and orphans. A richly-decorated stucco gate leads to the dwellings, grouped around a large courtyard garden. Two female figures are on the heavy pillars of the gate. The old woman represents Quiet. The woman with doves and an olive branch symbolises Peace. On the inside of the gate there is a commemorative stone on which the names of the gate donors and the curators at the time are inscribed. The creator of the two sculptures is unknown.
