Anna Dekking-van Haeften

About this artwork.

Two children seek security with their mother figure. One child flings her arms around the waist of the sitting mother, while she seems to be comforting her other child. This cement sculpture is one of Anne Dekking-van Haeften's most famous works. The colossal work forms a curious contrast with the fragile wire figures by the same artist on top of the school building.

Anne Dekking-van Haeften began her career as an artist around 1925 by drawing portraits. Later she switched to modelling human figures and making sculptures. To learn how to sculpt well, the artist stayed in Paris in 1952-1953 and took lessons from the famous sculptor Karl Longuet. From 1956 she was awarded large commissions for sculptures. Some of her most famous works are Life and Death and Affect (Tasten) – both of which are located in Groningen – and the war memorial in Delfzijl.
