Ontmoeting (Encounter)
Bastiaan de Groot
About this artwork.
Boulders of various sizes lie scattered on a one-and-a-half metre high hill, around a granite staircase leading to a natural stone bench. The boulders, which are hundreds of thousands of years old, were deposited by glaciers from Scandinavia during the penultimate ice age (± 240,000 to ± 130,000 years ago) in the northern Netherlands. Both the scattered origin of the boulders (Germany and the Scandinavian countries) and the arrangement around the stairs and bench symbolise the theme of 'encounter' in all its diversity; between people, countries and cultures.
As a result of new construction on the site, the land art sculpture was temporarily removed in 2004/2005, after which it was replaced on a smaller scale.
