About this artwork.

N.NE.E.SE.S.SW.W.NW.N. was designed by Erick de Lyon, from Amsterdam, for the Eelderbaan. Seventeen lampposts are spread over the Eelderbaan in a line. This line runs parallel to the lines of sight of the park: the poles are also in the water. They are no ordinary lighting columns, as you can see from the sleek design and the kink at the top. There is a light consisting of LEDS that can adopt different colours. They react to the direction of the wind: when it changes, the light at the top also assumes a different colour. The wind actually blows the lights on and off. This type of weather vane measures the wind direction and transmits this information to the control box. From this computer-controlled nerve centre, a cable transmits the signal to each light. On the north side of the green strip there is a special specimen with eight light points that completes the row. Here you can see which colour indicates which wind direction. If the wind is too weak the lampposts show a solid color.
 
The wind directions can be recognised by the following colours:
North – ocean blue
North East – white
East – lavender
South East – magenta
South – red
South West – yellow
West – green
North West – blue
