Mysteries of Helperzoom (Mysteries van Helperzoom)

Will Beckers

About this artwork.

Mysteries of Helperzoom are two large works of art at the beginning and end of the Helperzoom intersection; they are placed in a green area of high ecological value. About 250 plant species and 100 animal species have their biotope here:  insects, butterflies, dragonflies and birds, but also frogs and toads, (water) bats and other small mammals. The many trees, including monumental elms, give the area a green vibe.

The two organic sculptures form an ecological connection with the nature surrounding them. The artwork at Europapark station is a symbolic representation of the cross-section of the stem of a cattail, a water plant abundant in the area. It is made of weathering steel and willow branches, through which a living hazel tree is woven. As a result, the sculpture changes colour in line with the seasons; in summer it is green and in winter a calm brown. Moreover, it offers squirrels a place to rest and forage: a short pit stop to eat some hazelnuts before crossing to the Sterrebos woods.

The artwork on the south side is the symbolic representation of the caterpillar of a common copper butterfly. By choosing this form, the artist is referring to the presence of the small common copper butterfly in the area. This visual work consists of a natural, living hazel wickerwork that gradually rises from the ground and then literally grows into the sculpture (made of metal and weathering steel).

Visual artist Will Beckers specializes in making art-in-nature. His work often takes the form of a bio-sculpture or a growing organism, forming a dialogue with the landscape.
