Mural Poortersplein
Rachel van Balen
About this artwork.
A large mural has been painted on a wall at Poortersplein. Artist Rachel van Balen brightened up the wall in just three weeks with a painting of an old house and large flowers. The starting point for the mural is the history of Poortersplein.
There, right next to the Steentilpoort, on the corner of Damsterdiep and Oostersingel, stood the Poortershuisje. It was badly damaged during the Second World War, after which it was demolished.
The mural depicts the house in an almost photorealistic style. Behind it, in a more graphic style, large colourful flowers and cheerful stinsen plants rise up. They refer to an old garden that used to be around the corner of Poortersplein. Thanks to the mural, the old garden and the Poortershuisje are now back in the Groningen streetscape.
About the assignment.
