Mural House of Connections
Kamilė Česnavičiūtė
About this artwork.
The Lithuanian artist Kamilė Česnavičiūte has made a mural in the RUG House of Connections, which is part of the Groot Handelshuis on the Grote Markt. The artwork is located on the right wall of the stairs to the first floor. The work focuses on the concrete connection between science and society.
Artist Česnavičiūte was commissioned after she and two other artists submitted sketches to the art committee, which included Rector Magnificus of the RUG Cisca Wijmenga. Česnavičiūte: "The assignment appealed to me because it is about the ways in which the university seeks to connect with society. The mural represents my interpretation of this."
About the assignment.
The mural by Česnavičiūte is the third in a series of academic murals about Groningen science and scientists. The series is commissioned by the University of Groningen in collaboration with Kunstpunt. VAAF previously realized the painting of Aletta Jacobs on the Academieplein, and Fynn van der Ziel made a mural dedicated to astronomer Jacobus Kapteyn, in the corridor to the University Museum.
